Emergency Infant First Aid Guide

Essential life-saving instructions: infant choking protocol (back blows and chest thrusts), fall monitoring, burns, and weight-based fever dosing.

Emergency Infant First Aid Guide
Proper choking maneuvers and weight-based fever medication are vital skills for every parent.
🚨 In Life-Threatening Emergencies: Call emergency services immediately (112 in Europe, 911 in the US, 103 in RU). Put the phone on speaker and begin first aid immediately!

1. Infant Choking (Under 1 Year Old)

If an infant is coughing forcefully or crying, the airway is only partially blocked. Do not interfere — allow them to cough it out. If the baby is silent, unable to cry, or turning blue, act immediately:

Step 1: 5 Back Blows
Lay the infant facedown along your forearm, supporting their jaw with your hand. Rest your arm on your thigh. Ensure the head is lower than the chest. Deliver up to 5 firm blows between the shoulder blades with the heel of your free hand.
Step 2: 5 Chest Thrusts
If the object is not dislodged, flip the baby faceup onto your other forearm, keeping the head lower than the chest. Place 2 fingers in the center of the breastbone (just below the nipple line). Deliver 5 quick chest thrusts (compressing about 1.5 inches / 4 cm).

Repeat 5 back blows and 5 chest thrusts until the object is expelled or emergency responders arrive. NEVER perform blind finger sweeps in the mouth!

2. Falls from Beds or Changing Tables

Falls are the leading cause of accidental injury in infants. If your baby falls:

  • Do not move the baby if you suspect a neck or spinal injury (unless they are in immediate danger).
  • Watch for Red Flags (First 24–48 Hours): Loss of consciousness (even for seconds), repeated vomiting, uneven pupils, bleeding or clear fluid from ears/nose, excessive sleepiness where baby won't wake for feeds, or a soft bulging spot on the head. If any occur, go to the emergency room immediately.
  • Apply a cold compress wrapped in a towel to bumps or bruises for 10 minutes.

3. Burns & Scalds (Hot Liquids)

  • Immediately Cool: Hold the burned area under cool running tap water for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • DO NOT apply: Butter, ice, oils, egg whites, or panthenol sprays on fresh burns — they trap heat and increase tissue damage.
  • Cover loosely with clean plastic cling wrap or a sterile non-stick cloth and seek medical attention for burns larger than a coin or with blisters.

4. Pediatric Medication Dosing by WEIGHT (Not Age)

💡 Golden Safety Rule: Always dose pediatric liquid paracetamol (acetaminophen) and ibuprofen by the child's weight, never by age brackets on the bottle:
  • Paracetamol: 10–15 mg per kg of body weight every 4–6 hours (max 4 doses in 24 hours).
  • Ibuprofen: 5–10 mg per kg of body weight every 6–8 hours (only for infants older than 3 months and weighing over 5 kg).
  • Never give Aspirin to children or teens due to the risk of life-threatening Reye's syndrome!
