1. Nasal Congestion & Colds: Why Decongestants are Banned Under 1 Year
Infants are obligate nasal breathers until about 4–6 months old. A blocked nose prevents them from nursing and sleeping. However, over-the-counter decongestant nasal drops (Xylometazoline, Oxymetazoline, Naphazoline) are strictly contraindicated under 1 year by the FDA and AAP due to the risk of severe cardiovascular side effects, hypothermia, and central nervous system depression.
2. Croup (Barking Cough & Stridor)
Croup (viral laryngotracheobronchitis) typically strikes children between 6 months and 3 years, most often in the middle of the night:
- Symptoms: Harsh, barking cough (sounds like a seal bark), raspy voice, and high-pitched whistling noise when breathing IN (inspiratory stridor).
- First-Aid Home Action: Take the child immediately into cool, humid night air (open a window or step onto a balcony) or sit in a steamy bathroom for 15 minutes. Cool moist air rapidly reduces subglottic swelling.
- Emergency Red Flag: If the child has stridor at rest, blue lips, or struggle to draw breath (chest pulling in), call 112 / 911 immediately!
3. Roseola Infantum (Sixth Disease)
Caused by Human Herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6). Typical course:
- Days 1–3: Sudden high fever (39–40°C / 102–104°F) with no runny nose, no cough, and normal throat. Baby may be irritable but alert.
- Day 4: Fever drops completely to normal within hours, immediately followed by a fine, pink, non-itchy rash on the chest, back, and neck.
- Parent Note: This rash is the natural resolution of the virus, NOT an allergic reaction to antibiotics or fever reducers! It clears completely in 2–3 days without treatment.
